Avatar fans, this one is spicy: Katara almost returned in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender while pregnant with Bumi.
The new Avatar Studios film puts the spotlight on an older Aang, years after the original Avatar: The Last Airbender finale. That means the Gaang are no longer just kids saving the world — Aang and Katara are already in a serious stage of life, and the movie had room to explore what adulthood looks like for them.
At San Diego Comic-Con, creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino revealed that an early version of the story pushed that idea even further. Katara was originally planned to be pregnant during the film, with the child being Bumi, the first child of Aang and Katara as later known from The Legend of Korra.
DiMartino said the team was working out how much older the characters should be. Starting a family felt like a huge life milestone, but the more they looked at it, the more it seemed like the story was skipping too far ahead. Instead of catching Aang and Katara in that messy young-adult transition, a pregnant Katara made the film feel like it had jumped straight into a much later chapter.
The wild part? The creators were not planning to sideline Katara. Even while pregnant, she was still meant to be involved in the action and fighting. That is very Katara, honestly — she has never been the type to sit quietly while everyone else handles the problem.
But director Lauren Montgomery eventually pushed back on the idea, and the team agreed it was better to drop it. Konietzko explained that Katara’s pregnancy started to change the feeling of the plot in a strange way. The concern was that it could make the family angle feel like a plot device, especially if the story accidentally framed her pregnancy around the need for another airbender.
For Malaysian and SEA fans who grew up with Avatar on Nickelodeon, this is the kind of behind-the-scenes detail that hits hard. Aang and Katara’s relationship is one of those ships people still argue about in group chats, Discord servers, and con queues. Seeing them older is already a big emotional pull; making Katara pregnant would have completely changed the vibe from adventure movie to family legacy drama.
Honestly, cutting it sounds like the cleaner call. Adult Aang is already a huge selling point. The movie does not need to speedrun every major life event just to prove the characters grew up. Let them mature first, let the relationship breathe, then maybe bring in the family era later.
Montgomery did suggest the door is not completely closed on Katara returning in that kind of storyline someday. However, Konietzko and DiMartino also made it clear that sequels are not currently in development. Avatar fans still have more bending content to look forward to, though, with Avatar: Seven Havens coming this October and another secret show also in the works.
So for now, pregnant Katara remains one of those “almost happened” Avatar ideas. Cool concept, but maybe better saved for a future chapter — not the first big adult Aang story.
