Dead Rock Is Going on Hiatus, But Mashima Fans Don’t Need to Panic

Hiro Mashima fans, heads up: Dead Rock is taking a break — but this is not one of those scary manga hiatus situations.

The Kodansha-published shonen series, which launched in 2023, is going on hiatus after wrapping up its Academy Arc. The good news? According to the report, the pause is not connected to any health issue involving Mashima. The manga is already planned to continue with its next storyline, the Godfall Arc, sometime this winter. No exact return date has been announced yet.

For Malaysian and SEA manga readers, the main takeaway is simple: don’t treat this like a cancellation. This is more of a between-arcs breather, which honestly makes sense considering Mashima has been running at a wild pace for years.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Mashima is the creator behind Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, two series that have had strong followings among anime fans here — especially the crowd that grew up watching long-running battle shonen and still remembers guild wars, friendship power-ups, and chaotic tournament arcs. On top of Dead Rock, Mashima has also been working on Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, the sequel to his biggest hit. Juggling two manga projects at once is already gila enough, but Mashima’s work ethic has become almost legendary in the manga space.

The report notes that Mashima has previously described a brutal schedule: six working days a week, with 17-hour days spent creating manga. That kind of grind is not uncommon in the industry, but it is still the sort of thing that makes fans both impressed and worried. We have seen enough manga creators burn out, so a planned break after a major arc is honestly healthier than forcing weekly hype until something breaks.

Dead Rock itself has a pretty strong hook. The story follows Yakuto, who gets accepted into a demonic university and feels like he has finally landed his dream opportunity. If that sounds a little like the “special school for powerful students” setup from My Hero Academia, the vibe here is much darker and more dangerous. Think less heroic classroom training, more supernatural survival with Mashima’s usual high-energy style.

The timing is interesting because shonen manga has been in a transition era. Heavy hitters like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia have already ended, while other series such as Astro Royale, The Trembling Right Hand, and Kemonokuni have also wrapped up. So when a newer title like Dead Rock pauses, fans naturally pay attention — especially when everyone is looking for the next big shonen obsession.

As for an anime adaptation, nothing has been confirmed. Still, it is not a crazy idea. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest and Edens Zero both received anime versions from J.C. Staff, so the studio would be an obvious name to watch if Dead Rock ever makes the jump. That said, J.C. Staff has also been under fan scrutiny recently over One-Punch Man Season 3, so any future adaptation would come with expectations.

For now, Dead Rock readers just need to tahan a bit. The Academy Arc is done, the Godfall Arc is coming, and Mashima’s latest shonen still has plenty of room to grow.
