Frieren Manga Hits One Year on Hiatus, With No Return Date Announced

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has passed a full year without a new manga chapter, and there is still no announced date for its return, according to ComicBook Anime’s October 21 report.

The series entered an indefinite hiatus after Chapter 147 was released in Japan on October 14, 2025. The break was attributed to health concerns involving creators Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe.

That makes this a frustrating anniversary for readers, but the important distinction is simple: an extended absence is not a cancellation announcement. The report provides no timetable for another chapter or further details about the creators’ health.

Where the manga stands

Frieren began its run in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2020. Its television adaptation subsequently brought more attention to the manga, but publication has also been interrupted by several breaks.

Those included another hiatus lasting several months in 2025, before the current pause began that October. ComicBook describes the ongoing break as the longest in the series’ publication history.

For anyone checking whether there is finally a Chapter 148 date, the answer remains not announced in the report. There is no confirmed return window to put on your calendar.

The manga’s commercial momentum has not disappeared, however. ComicBook reports that Frieren continues to top sales charts in Japan despite the lack of new chapters. It does not provide specific sales figures or identify individual chart periods, so that should not be stretched into a more detailed sales claim.

Season 3 is a separate update

While the manga remains paused, the anime has another season on the schedule. Frieren Season 3 is planned for October 2027, within the fall anime season.

According to the report, Madhouse is producing the season, with returning staff including:

  • Tomoya Kitagawa as director
  • Tomomi Suzuki handling series composition
  • Maru Takase and Keisuke Kojima on character designs
  • Evan Call composing the music

The next season will adapt the Golden Land Arc, which received brief teases during Season 2. ComicBook describes it as the series’ biggest arc so far.

It will also introduce Macht, described in the report as the strongest member of the Seven Sages of Destruction. His voice actor had not been announced at the time of publication.

That is a substantial anime update, but it is not evidence that manga production is about to resume. These are two different developments, and the source does not connect the anime’s schedule to a new chapter release.

What this means for Malaysia and SEA readers

Our take: The useful distinction for Malaysian and wider SEA fans is between having more anime to anticipate and having more manga to read. Season 3 offers a stated release window; the manga currently offers no equivalent certainty.

If you are considering moving from the anime to the manga, this is worth knowing before you catch up: reaching the latest published chapter currently means reaching an unresolved publication pause, not a confirmed next instalment date.

There is also no basis here for guessing when the creators will be ready to return. Health-related breaks do not come with a reliable countdown, and the absence of an update should not be turned into a prediction.

For now, the clearest position is also the least dramatic: Frieren’s manga remains on indefinite hiatus, while its anime is scheduled to continue in October 2027. The wait is disappointing. A return date, though, needs an announcement—not wishful thinking.
