Physical anime collectors, this one is worth keeping on your radar.
MediaOCD has announced a new sales agreement with Aniplex of America that lets it sell selected Aniplex anime Blu-ray Disc releases through the MediaOCD online store. The first batch is already a pretty strong starter pack: Gurren Lagann and Mashle: Magic and Muscles.
The initial Aniplex of America titles listed through MediaOCD include the Gurren Lagann television anime and films, plus both currently released seasons of Mashle: Magic and Muscles. No, this is not a brand-new anime announcement, and the source does not mention any Malaysia or SEA-specific release details. But for fans who follow overseas physical releases, especially collectors who care about box sets, bonus materials, and disc versions, this is still interesting.
What’s in the Gurren Lagann releases?
The big one is the Gurren Lagann Complete Blu-ray Disc Box. This set includes all 27 episodes of the 2007 TV anime, along with both movies: Gurren Lagann the Movie -Childhood's End- and Gurren Lagann the Movie -The Lights in the Sky Are Stars-.
There is also some nice deep-cut material included. The set comes with the special Blu-ray Disc version of episode six, titled “There Are Some Things I Just Have to See!!”, as well as the broadcast version, “Sit In the Hot Tub 'Til You're Sick!” For longtime fans, that kind of version difference is exactly the sort of thing that makes a physical release feel more archival, not just “watch it again but on disc.”
MediaOCD is also listing the Gurren Lagann the Movie 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, which features both films remastered in 4K. That remaster was tied to the movies’ 15th anniversary in 2023. The release also includes the English dub for both films, which first appeared during the films’ North American revival screenings in 2024.
Quick refresher: Gurren Lagann first aired as a 27-episode TV anime in 2007. It later expanded with two anime films, two OVAs, multiple manga adaptations and spinoffs, and even three stage plays. The first movie, Childhood's End, opened in September 2008, while The Lights in the Sky Are Stars followed in April 2009.
Mashle gets both seasons on Blu-ray too
For newer shonen fans, the Mashle: Magic and Muscles side of the deal is just as relevant.
MediaOCD’s current Aniplex selection includes the Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 1 Complete Blu-ray Disc Box and the Mashle: Magic and Muscles The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc Complete Blu-ray Disc Box.
Both releases come with bonus items: mini-character stickers, a special booklet, an original soundtrack CD, and creditless opening and ending videos. The Season 1 box also has a U.S. Blu-ray exclusive coaster.
The first season of Mashle premiered in April 2023, followed by the second season in January 2024. A third season is currently set to debut in January 2027.
Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA fans
Analysis: This deal matters because physical anime releases are increasingly becoming collector-first products. Streaming is still the easiest way most fans keep up with seasonal anime, but Blu-ray boxes are where studios and distributors often package cleaner video, bonus material, soundtracks, booklets, and version-specific extras.
For Malaysia and SEA readers, the important thing is not to assume local distribution from this announcement. The source only says these titles are available through MediaOCD’s website under a sales agreement with Aniplex of America. It does not mention Malaysian pricing, regional shipping, local retailers, or SEA availability.
Still, if you collect anime physically or track premium releases from overseas, this is a useful development. Gurren Lagann remains one of those “bro, you need to watch this once in your life” classics, while Mashle is still active with another season on the way. Different generations of anime fans, same shelf-space problem.
