Shinya Misu’s Osananajimi to wa Love Comedy ni Naranai — known in English as You Can't Be In a Rom-Com with Your Childhood Friends! — is officially heading to the finish line.
According to an announcement from the manga’s official X account, the romantic comedy series will end in three more chapters. So yeah, if you’ve been following the childhood-friend chaos, now is the time to mentally prepare. The endgame is here.
The manga first launched on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket web service in March 2022, and has built itself around one of rom-com’s most dangerous setups: childhood friends, messy feelings, and the kind of relationship tension that makes readers argue over ships every week. Kodansha published the series’ 20th volume on May 8, which gives a pretty clear idea that this is not some short experimental run — the story has had time to stretch, build its cast, and let the romance properly simmer.
For English-language readers, Kodansha has also been simulpublishing the manga through its K Manga service under the title You Can't Be In a Rom-Com with Your Childhood Friends! That matters because SEA fans, including Malaysian readers, are increasingly following manga weekly through official digital platforms when available, instead of waiting years for local shelves or fan chatter to catch up.
The timing is also interesting because Osananajimi to wa Love Comedy ni Naranai already has a TV anime planned for 2026. That means the manga ending does not necessarily mean the franchise is going quiet. If anything, the anime could introduce the series to a much bigger casual audience next year — especially the crowd that only jumps in once there is a seasonal adaptation to watch.
For Malaysian anime fans, this is one of those titles worth keeping on the radar if you enjoy rom-coms with familiar but effective ingredients. Childhood-friend romance is a classic trope for a reason: everyone already knows each other too well, nobody wants to say the obvious thing, and the emotional damage is usually wrapped in comedy. Memang the kind of series that can become Discord debate fuel once the anime drops.
The big question now is how cleanly the manga can land its ending with only three chapters left. Rom-com finales can be tricky — rush the confession or final relationship decision and fans will complain; drag it too long and the payoff loses steam. With the series already at 20 volumes, readers will be expecting something more satisfying than a vague “maybe someday” ending.
If you are already following the manga, the next few chapters are basically must-read territory. If you are anime-only, maybe don’t scroll too freely once the finale lands, because spoilers will probably start flying around fast.
