Sony is bumping up PlayStation Plus prices again, but this round is aimed mainly at new subscribers in selected regions.
According to Sony, the change starts on Wednesday and affects the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus. The one-month plan is going up from US$9.99 to US$10.99, while the three-month plan moves from US$24.99 to US$27.99. Sony pointed to ongoing market conditions as the reason behind the increase.
For existing subscribers, the important bit is this: Sony says the price change will not affect current members outside Turkey and India. So if you are already subscribed, you may not see an immediate change depending on your region and account status. Still, for Malaysian and SEA players, this is the kind of pricing move worth watching closely because PlayStation subscription costs have already been creeping up over the past few years.
At a rough conversion, US$10.99 is around RM52, while US$27.99 is around RM132 before any local pricing differences, taxes, platform adjustments, or currency movement. Malaysia does not always follow US pricing directly, but global PlayStation changes tend to matter because they signal where Sony wants the service to go long-term.
PlayStation Plus Essential is the entry-level tier, but for a lot of console players it is not really optional. You need PlayStation Plus for many online multiplayer games, which means FIFA/EA Sports FC squads, Call of Duty lobbies, fighting game nights, GTA Online sessions, and plenty of other multiplayer titles are tied to the subscription. Essential also includes monthly games selected by Sony Interactive Entertainment and cloud save storage.
The higher tiers remain positioned as the bigger content bundles. PlayStation Plus Extra includes the Essential benefits plus access to a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games. Premium adds older-generation content, including PS3 titles, a selection of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PSP games, plus streaming on compatible devices and time-limited trials for selected games.
This is not the first PlayStation Plus price shift either. Sony raised annual PlayStation Plus subscription prices globally in 2023. More recently, the company also increased prices for PlayStation hardware, including the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, from April 2, citing pressure from the global economic environment.
Sony Interactive Entertainment also raised US console pricing last August, with the PS5 moving from US$499.99 to US$549.99, the PS5 Digital Edition from US$449.99 to US$499.99, and the PS5 Pro from US$699.99 to US$749.99.
For Malaysian gamers, the takeaway is simple: if you already rely on PlayStation Plus for multiplayer, keep an eye on your renewal pricing and local PlayStation Store notices. If you are planning to jump into the PS5 ecosystem soon, subscription cost is now part of the real ownership calculation, same level as games, extra controllers, SSD upgrades, and PS Store sales.
Console gaming is still solid, bro, but the monthly bill is starting to feel less casual than before.
