Studio Ghibli Set to Name Kenichi Yoda as New President This June

Studio Ghibli is getting a major leadership update this June, with Kenichi Yoda set to become the studio’s new president.

For anime fans in Malaysia and across SEA, this is the kind of behind-the-scenes move worth watching. Ghibli is not just another anime studio — it is basically one of the biggest names in Japanese animation globally, with films that still pull in new fans years after release. So when the top seat changes, people naturally want to know what it could mean for the studio’s future.

Who is Kenichi Yoda?

Yoda is not coming in as a random corporate outsider. He has already been connected to Ghibli through Nippon Television, better known as NTV, which became Studio Ghibli’s largest shareholder in 2023. That deal effectively made Ghibli a subsidiary under NTV’s umbrella.

At NTV, Yoda has handled event-related work, including concerts, exhibitions, and stage productions. More importantly, he has already been acting as NTV’s main contact person for Ghibli, so this appointment looks more like a continuation of an existing relationship than a sudden shake-up.

Yoda was born on August 14, 1974. His career started at the Tokyo headquarters of The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper in April 1999, before he moved to Nippon Television Network Corporation in December 2014. Ghibli later brought him onto its board of directors in October 2023, and NTV appointed him as a general specialist in its content strategy division in June 2024.

What happens to Hiroyuki Fukuda?

Current Studio Ghibli president Hiroyuki Fukuda is not disappearing from the picture. According to the report, he will remain as a board director at Ghibli.

Fukuda also has a major role at Nippon Television Holdings, where he has served as representative director, president, and chief operating officer since January 2025. That means the Ghibli-NTV connection remains very much intact even with Yoda stepping into the president role.

Why SEA fans should care

For Malaysian fans, the immediate question is probably: does this mean new movies, more exhibitions, or better regional access to Ghibli content?

The source report does not mention any new film project or creative announcement, so jangan over-read it. This is a leadership and corporate management update, not a new anime reveal.

But Yoda’s background is interesting because it leans heavily into live events and content strategy. Ghibli’s brand travels well in Southeast Asia — from cinema re-releases to merchandise drops, themed exhibitions, and fan events. If the studio under NTV continues pushing that side of the business, SEA markets like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines could benefit from more official Ghibli-related experiences.

That matters because Ghibli fandom here is already strong, but official access can be inconsistent. Fans often rely on overseas exhibitions, imported merch, or limited-time cinema screenings. A president with event and strategy experience may not change the studio’s creative DNA overnight, but it could influence how Ghibli connects with international audiences.

The bigger picture

Studio Ghibli has always had a unique identity, built around creators, craft, and a very specific artistic legacy. With NTV now deeply involved, leadership choices will be watched closely by fans who want the studio to protect that legacy instead of turning it into just another content machine.

For now, Yoda’s appointment signals that Ghibli’s next chapter will continue under NTV’s structure, with someone already familiar with both sides taking the lead. Not flashy news, but definitely important if you care about where one of anime’s most beloved studios goes next.
