More trouble is coming for Akira Satou

The Fable Season 2 is getting ready to bring the Yamaoka Arc to TV, and the production has now revealed a fresh batch of cast members alongside the anime’s main visual.

The second season is scheduled to premiere on Japan’s Nippon TV network on January 10, 2027, with episodes airing every Sunday at 12:55 a.m. The new season adapts the Yamaoka-hen, or Yamaoka Arc, from Katsuhisa Minami’s crime comedy manga.

For anyone who missed the first season, The Fable is not your standard power fantasy or school romcom. It follows a legendary hitman who is forced to live quietly, which is already a very funny setup because, bro, asking an elite assassin to act normal is basically asking for chaos.

New cast for Season 2

The newly announced cast includes:

  • Kouichi Yamadera as Yamaoka
  • Takanori Hoshino as Azami
  • Hiroyuki Yoshino as Eucalyptus
  • Satoshi Mikami as Koji Mizuno
  • Taiten Kusunoki as Jiro
  • Seiyuu Fujiwara as Suzumushi

That Yamaoka casting is the big one here. The arc’s name is literally on the season’s material, so his arrival signals that Season 2 is moving into heavier conflict territory rather than just continuing the “assassin trying to be normal” gag in a straight line.

Returning staff, same studio

Ryousuke Takahashi is back to direct Season 2 at Tezuka Productions. Yuuya Takashima is handling series composition, while Takashima and Mayumi Morita are writing the scripts. Character design duties are handled by Saki Hasegawa and Kyuuma Ooshita, with Yo Tsuji composing the music.

The first season aired across 25 episodes in Spring 2024. According to the source, Disney+ and Hulu simulcasted that season with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages. No Season 2 streaming platform announcement is stated in the source material, so don’t assume where it will land yet.

Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA anime fans

Analysis: The Fable sits in a nice lane for viewers who want something older, sharper, and less “weekly shonen tournament arc.” SEA anime fans get flooded with isekai, idol shows, and big battle adaptations every season, so a crime comedy with deadpan humour and adult tension can stand out if the execution stays tight.

The Yamaoka Arc also gives Season 2 a clear hook. Instead of just announcing “more episodes,” the production is pointing to a specific manga arc, which usually helps fans understand what kind of story escalation to expect. For manga readers, that means the anime is stepping into familiar material. For anime-only viewers, it signals that the second season should have a more focused direction.

Manga background

Katsuhisa Minami’s original The Fable manga ran in Weekly Young Magazine from November 2014 to November 2019. A sequel, The Fable: The Second Contact, followed in the same magazine from July 2021 to July 2023. Another sequel, The Fable: The Third Secret, began in March 2025, with its fifth volume released on July 6 and the sixth volume scheduled for November 6.

Kodansha USA licensed the original manga in English in March 2022 and released the final 22nd volume in January 2024. All three manga series are also simulpublished on the K Manga platform.

The series has pedigree too: The Fable won the General category at the 41st Kodansha Manga Awards in 2017 and ranked among the top 20 titles in the Male Readers division of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! in both 2019 and 2020.

Basically, this is not some random crime manga getting another season for fun. The Fable has history, awards, and enough weird assassin energy to make Season 2 worth watching when it arrives.
