007 First Light Switch 2 Version Is Still Alive, IO Interactive Says
Nintendo Switch 2 owners may need to wait a bit longer for 007 First Light, but IO Interactive wants fans to know one thing clearly: the game has not vanished into cancellation limbo.
The new James Bond game is still set to arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later this month, while the Switch 2 version is currently listed for a broader Summer window. That vague timing has made some Nintendo fans nervous, especially after recent high-profile third-party weirdness on the platform.
But according to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, the Switch 2 build already exists and is running on Nintendo’s new hardware. The studio’s issue is not whether the game can run, but whether it can launch in a state IOI is happy to stand behind.
Abrak told The Game Business that the team needs extra time to bring the Switch 2 version up to standard, with the release now likely landing closer to late summer. His message was basically: they do not want players saying the Nintendo version is the bad version. Fair enough, bro — nobody wants another “portable port but compromised until cannot recommend” situation.
For Malaysian and SEA players, this matters quite a bit. Nintendo’s handheld audience here is strong, especially among players who like gaming on commute, during travel, or in that classic lepak-on-the-bed mode. A proper Switch 2 version of a big cinematic action game like 007 First Light could be a solid showcase for the new hardware — but only if performance, visuals, and controls feel polished enough.
The concern comes partly from what happened with Borderlands 4 on Switch 2. Take-Two and Gearbox previously delayed that version shortly before release, only for it to be cancelled later. That made people extra suspicious of vague windows and “just needs more time” messaging. In this case, IOI is pushing back against that fear directly, saying the Bond game is already running and still planned for release.
There is also a nice bit of Nintendo history here. James Bond has a special connection with Nintendo thanks to GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64, a game that basically became legendary among couch multiplayer fans. Many older Malaysian gamers will remember that era through cyber cafes, friend’s houses, or retro gaming circles — four-player split-screen chaos, everyone accusing Oddjob players of being cheap. Classic.
Gameplay-wise, 007 First Light is also not just “Hitman with a tuxedo”. IO Interactive is known for stealth sandboxes, but the studio has already suggested this Bond game will flow differently. Global Brand Manager Laurine Deschamps has said stealth and action are meant to connect more naturally, and getting into combat will not automatically mean you messed up the mission.
That is important because Bond is not Agent 47. He sneaks, sure, but he also improvises, fights, escapes, and causes expensive property damage with style. If IOI gets that balance right, this could be one of the more interesting licensed games in years.
For now, the takeaway is simple: Switch 2 players are not getting 007 First Light day one, but the port is still alive. If the extra wait means a cleaner version instead of a rushed one, that is probably the better deal.
