Apple’s Future iPhone Cameras Could Get 200MP Zoom, Ultra-Wide OIS And Variable Aperture

Apple’s next few Pro iPhones might be getting a serious camera shake-up, and this one is worth watching even if you are not the type to queue outside an Apple Store.

According to new claims from Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro line and the later iPhone 20 could bring more than just the already-rumoured variable aperture camera. The reported upgrade list includes a much larger main camera sensor, optical image stabilization for the ultra-wide camera, and a 200MP telephoto setup.

That last one is the spicy bit. A 200MP telephoto camera could allow Apple to crop into shots while keeping more detail, at least within limits. In real-world terms, that means cleaner zoomed-in photos without always needing a dedicated longer optical lens. For concert shots, esports stages, anime convention performances, cosplay portraits, or just food photos under chaotic mall lighting, that kind of flexibility matters.

What Apple is reportedly testing

The current rumour stack looks like this:

  • Variable aperture for the Pro camera system
  • A larger main sensor
  • Ultra-wide camera with dedicated optical image stabilization
  • A 200MP telephoto camera for higher-detail zoom and cropping
  • Possible design work around a slightly curved aperture in future models

Variable aperture has already been widely discussed, and Wccftech notes that production is reportedly split between Largan and Sunny Optical. If it makes the final phone, this could let the camera physically adjust how much light enters the lens, giving Apple more control over depth of field and low-light performance.

For Malaysian and SEA users, the ultra-wide OIS rumour is low-key one of the most useful upgrades. Ultra-wide cameras are fun, but they can struggle badly at night — and let’s be real, a lot of our best shots happen indoors, at mamak, in malls, at PC fairs, or under weird event lighting. Stabilization could help keep ultra-wide video and photos sharper when your hands are not exactly tripod-level steady.

Don’t expect everything at once

Here’s the important caveat: this may not all arrive on the iPhone 18 Pro series in one shot.

Digital Chat Station reportedly suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro line is likely to debut variable aperture first. If Apple’s testing goes well, the other camera technologies may be added gradually across later generations.

That makes sense. Apple rarely dumps every experimental feature into one phone, especially when it has a big anniversary model coming. The iPhone 20 is expected in 2027 as Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone, so it would not be surprising if the company keeps some headline camera tricks for that launch.

Why SEA buyers should care

For Malaysia, the big question will eventually be price. No Malaysian pricing or launch details are available yet, but Pro iPhones are already premium purchases here, especially once you factor in storage upgrades and AppleCare. If Apple spreads these camera upgrades across multiple generations, buyers may need to think carefully instead of blindly upgrading every year.

If the iPhone 18 Pro only gets variable aperture while the 200MP telephoto or ultra-wide OIS lands later, some users may prefer waiting. But if you shoot a lot of creator content, travel reels, esports clips, or event coverage, these camera improvements could be more meaningful than another small chip bump.

For now, treat this as an early rumour with credible tipster chatter, not confirmed Apple specs. Still, the direction is clear: Apple seems to be preparing a more aggressive camera hardware push over the next few iPhone generations.

And honestly, if the 200MP telephoto is tuned properly, Android flagships might finally get a proper fight in the zoom flex department.
