GTA 6’s Massive Budget Has Take-Two Talking About Game Industry Costs

Even GTA-sized games are feeling the pressure

Grand Theft Auto 6 is basically the definition of a “sure hit” game. It is one of the most anticipated releases of the decade, it comes from Rockstar Games, and it follows one of the most successful entertainment products ever made in GTA 5.

But even with all that hype behind it, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick is already talking about a very real problem: modern blockbuster games are becoming insanely expensive to make.

According to Dot Esports, GTA 6 has reportedly crossed the billion-dollar mark in production costs, with the game currently moving toward a November release. That number sounds unreal, but honestly, it fits the scale of what Rockstar is trying to deliver — huge open world, cinematic detail, long-term online support, and the kind of polish players expect after waiting more than a decade.

The scary part? If a franchise as massive as GTA is part of this cost conversation, what happens to everyone else?

Take-Two says costs can’t keep climbing forever

In a Bloomberg interview with Jason Schreier, Zelnick reflected on how difficult it is becoming to keep funding giant games if production costs continue growing. His point was clear: the industry cannot survive if budgets keep increasing endlessly, whether quickly or even at a steady pace.

That matters because Take-Two does not only own Rockstar. It also has other big-name series under its umbrella, including BioShock and Borderlands. These are recognisable franchises with strong fanbases, but they are not GTA-level money printers.

When asked whether there is a ceiling for growth on those kinds of games, Zelnick said there is. In simple terms: publishers will need to find smarter ways to make games, or some projects may not happen at all.

That is the bit gamers in Malaysia and SEA should pay attention to. We always talk about wanting bigger maps, better graphics, more voice acting, deeper stories, constant updates, and cheaper prices. But if every major game needs a Hollywood-level budget, publishers will either raise prices, cut risks, lean harder on monetisation, or simply greenlight fewer games.

None of those options are great for players.

AI, “technology,” and the future of game development

Zelnick also touched on the possibility of using AI, though he later framed it more broadly as “technology.” His argument was that games have always been built using computers, so the industry will continue exploring tools that can help teams work more efficiently.

That will probably be one of the biggest debates in gaming over the next few years. On one side, better tools could help studios reduce repetitive work and make ambitious games possible without budgets going completely gila. On the other side, developers are already dealing with layoffs across the industry, even at companies attached to successful games.

So when executives talk about AI helping production, many developers and players will naturally worry about what that means for jobs, creativity, and the human touch that makes great games feel alive.

Why SEA players should care

For Malaysian gamers, this is not just corporate boardroom talk. Rising costs can affect what we actually get to play.

If development budgets keep ballooning, publishers may become more cautious. That could mean fewer weird, risky, or niche games. It could also mean more live-service systems, pricier editions, longer gaps between sequels, and heavier pressure to keep players spending after launch.

SEA players already feel pricing harder because of currency conversion. A “standard” premium game can become a serious purchase here, especially for students or younger players. If major publishers decide they need to charge differently to keep games viable, our region will definitely feel it.

GTA 6 will almost certainly be huge when it lands. But Zelnick’s comments show that even the biggest names in gaming are asking the same uncomfortable question: how long can this blockbuster model keep going?
