Lenovo G02 Quietly Pops Up as a Budget Retro Handheld for Around RM300

Lenovo might be making a very different kind of handheld play with the G02, a small retro gaming device that has appeared on AliExpress for US$63.56 — roughly around RM300 before shipping, tax, vouchers, or platform discounts.

That is a totally different lane from Lenovo’s Legion Go family, which targets the premium handheld PC crowd. Instead of chasing Steam Deck-style Windows gaming, the G02 looks built for the retro handheld market: affordable, compact, Linux-based, and made for older console emulation.

The interesting part? Lenovo has not given this thing a big global announcement. Tom’s Hardware notes that X user Retro Gaming With Deadfred showed what appears to be official Lenovo packaging, with the device booting into a Lenovo logo. Mentions of the G02 also reportedly exist on Lenovo’s official China site, though there is no obvious listing on Lenovo’s US site.

For Malaysian buyers, this is the kind of gadget that will probably get attention fast if it lands through AliExpress, Lazada import sellers, or Shopee resellers. A branded retro handheld at around RM300 sounds tempting, especially when many casual players just want something for Pokémon-era nostalgia, arcade classics, or quick couch sessions without draining their phone battery.

What the Lenovo G02 seems to offer

Retailer listings point to a Rockchip RK3326 chip inside the G02. That combines a quad-core Arm Cortex-A35 CPU running up to 1.5GHz with Mali-G31 MP2 graphics. It is not a new chip — actually, it is pretty old by 2026 standards — but it remains common in budget retro handhelds.

The G02 is also listed with 1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage, plus microSD expansion up to 1TB. For retro ROM libraries, the microSD slot matters more than the onboard storage.

Performance-wise, expectations need to be realistic. This class of hardware should be fine for older systems like NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, and PlayStation 1. But if you are hoping for smooth Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube, or PS2, jangan dream too hard bro — that is where stronger Android handhelds or phone-plus-controller setups usually make more sense.

The display is one of the more interesting specs. The G02 reportedly uses a 4.5-inch IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 1024 x 768 resolution. That sounds nice for retro games, especially compared with many cheaper 3.5-inch handhelds. It also puts the device near rivals like the Anbernic RG405M and Retroid Pocket 3+ in terms of screen size range.

Linux, USB-C, and pocketable vibes

Unlike Windows or Android handhelds, the Lenovo G02 is listed with a 64-bit Linux-based OS supporting more than 30 emulators. Linux should help keep the experience lightweight, which matters when the device only has 1GB RAM.

Battery capacity is listed at 4000mAh, with expected playtime between three and six hours depending on usage. Charging is handled through USB-C, which is good — nobody wants another random cable in 2026.

The G02 comes in black, white, and red, with a plastic body measuring 149 x 99 x 34mm and weighing 258g. There is also a full button layout and an analogue stick with RGB lighting, because apparently even retro handhelds need a bit of gamer glow now.

Should Malaysians care?

Maybe — but price is everything here. At US$63.56, the G02 is not crazy expensive, but the retro handheld space is already full of aggressive brands like Anbernic and Retroid. Tom’s Hardware notes that Alibaba listings go as low as US$40 per unit, though with a 40-unit minimum order, so normal buyers are stuck watching AliExpress pricing and coupons.

If local sellers bring this in near RM300, it could be a fun entry-level retro machine with a recognisable Lenovo badge. If it creeps closer to RM400 or more, then Malaysian buyers should compare hard against Anbernic, Retroid, or just using a phone controller.

Bottom line: the Lenovo G02 looks like a budget nostalgia box, not a powerhouse. For PS1 and older games, it could be memang ngam. For PSP and beyond, better save your money for stronger hardware.
