Microsoft Refreshes Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro With New Intel Chips

Microsoft has given its Surface lineup a fresh 2026 update, covering four devices: the Surface Pro 13, Surface Laptop 13-inch, Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and Surface Laptop 15-inch.

The big headline is the move to Intel’s new Core Ultra Series 3 processors. For now, these are the Intel-powered models, with Snapdragon X2 versions expected to arrive later this year. So if you’re the type who wants better battery life and ARM-based Windows, maybe tahan dulu before pulling the trigger.

The bigger Surface Laptops get the nicer upgrades

The Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and 15-inch models are getting the most interesting changes this round. Microsoft is adding new display options, including versions with a privacy screen feature. Think of it like the idea behind Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra privacy-style screen tech — useful if you’re working in cafes, airports, coworking spaces or anywhere kaypoh people can glance at your spreadsheet.

For Malaysia and SEA users, that actually matters more than it sounds. A lot of students, founders and hybrid workers here use laptops in public spaces, from campus libraries to Starbucks to airport lounges. A built-in privacy-focused display could be genuinely useful, not just another spec-sheet flex.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop also gets a sharper display, although Microsoft is still using LCD here. OLED models are expected to arrive in the coming months, so anyone hoping for deeper blacks and punchier colours may want to wait. For anime, Netflix, YouTube and design work, OLED would obviously be the more tempting option.

New haptic trackpad for Windows 11

Another meaningful upgrade for the 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop models is the trackpad. Microsoft has added support for Windows 11 haptic feedback features, giving subtle vibrations during certain actions.

For example, when you snap a window into place or align objects, the trackpad can give you a small physical response. It’s not a gaming feature, but it does make the laptop feel more premium and precise. This is the kind of small quality-of-life upgrade that MacBook users have enjoyed for ages, so it’s good to see Microsoft pushing harder here.

Surface Laptop 13 gets Intel chips too

The smaller Surface Laptop 13-inch is also being updated with Intel’s new chips. It now comes with an anti-reflective display, which should help under bright office lighting or our very Malaysian “why is the sun attacking my screen” cafe setups.

This model starts at $1,499, which is definitely not cheap. Microsoft also has a more affordable version planned at $1,299, but that one comes with 8GB RAM and drops Copilot+ support.

That trade-off is worth paying attention to. In 2026, 8GB RAM on a premium Windows laptop feels quite tight, especially if you’re juggling Chrome tabs, Discord, Canva, Excel, Teams and maybe a light game on the side. For most Malaysian buyers, once local pricing and taxes come in, the value equation could get spicy.

Surface Pro 13 gets a smaller bump

The Surface Pro 13-inch update is more straightforward. It gets the new Core Ultra chips, but not the new haptic touchpad upgrade found on the Surface Laptop models.

The flagship Surface Pro and Surface Laptop configurations start from $1,949 with Intel Core Ultra 5 chips and 16GB RAM. Microsoft says the higher pricing is due to rising component costs.

Important note: these announced versions are aimed at business users. Broader commercial versions are expected to arrive alongside the OLED models later this summer.

For SEA buyers, the real question is simple: are these Surface machines still worth the premium once converted into RM? The hardware looks cleaner and more polished, but with MacBook Airs, gaming laptops and Snapdragon Windows machines all fighting in the same price zone, Microsoft needs more than just nice aluminium and Copilot branding to win people over.
