Samsung SmartThings Adds IKEA Matter Device Support

Samsung is giving its SmartThings platform a bigger smart home flex by adding deeper support for a range of IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices.

That means IKEA smart lights, air quality sensors, remote controls and smart plugs are getting a more direct path into Samsung’s connected home ecosystem. For users already living inside the Samsung world — Galaxy phone, Samsung TV, maybe a SmartThings hub at home — this should make IKEA gear easier to manage from one app instead of juggling multiple setups.

Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA homes

For Malaysian users, this is the kind of update that sounds small but can make a smart home setup way less annoying. Plenty of people here build their rooms and apartments around IKEA furniture, then slowly add smart lights, plugs, speakers, TVs and air quality gadgets over time. The dream is simple: walk into your room, tap one button, or use a voice command to kill the lights, switch on the fan plug, and start movie mode.

The problem? Smart home ecosystems can be messy. One brand wants its own app. Another needs a bridge. Some devices refuse to pair properly unless the moon is aligned, bro.

Samsung says it has worked on enhanced integration for IKEA’s devices, with both companies running validation rounds to improve connection stability. SmartThings will also get a dedicated experience for these IKEA products, which should make pairing and control feel more plug-and-play.

If it works as promised, this is good news for students, condo owners and home office setups across SEA. You could run routines like turning on desk lights at night, switching off plugs when leaving home, or checking air quality without needing to think too much about which brand made which gadget.

The Matter issue is still awkward

Here’s the funny part: Matter was already supposed to solve this.

Matter is the smart home standard designed to make devices from different brands work together more easily. In theory, you buy a Matter device, connect it to your preferred ecosystem, and everything just behaves. No drama, no weird compatibility guessing game.

But the real world has been more kacau. IKEA customers have reportedly faced serious issues getting the company’s Matter devices connected to their networks. So while Samsung and IKEA doing extra platform-specific work is helpful, it also shows that Matter still has homework to do.

Basically, this update is both a win and a reminder. Win because Samsung users may get a smoother IKEA smart home experience. Reminder because the whole promise of Matter was that users should not need special behind-the-scenes optimisation just to make basic smart devices behave.

SmartThings is getting stronger

Samsung has been steadily improving SmartThings beyond just basic device control. The platform supports automation routines, and Samsung recently added Siri voice command integration too. That matters because smart homes are only useful when they feel natural, not like maintaining another tech project.

For Malaysian buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: if you already use Samsung devices and are eyeing IKEA smart home gear, this integration makes the combo more attractive. Just don’t expect every Matter-related headache to disappear overnight.

Smart home life is getting better, slowly. But for now, “seamless” still needs to prove itself in actual homes, with actual Wi-Fi, actual routers, and actual impatient users trying to turn off the lights before tidur.
