Sony Xperia 1 VIII Reveal Locked For May 13, With A Fresh Camera-First Design Expected

Sony has finally put a date on its next big Xperia moment. The company has confirmed that its upcoming Xperia reveal will happen on May 13 at 11:00 AM Japan time, which means Malaysian fans can tune in at 10:00 AM MYT.

Sony being Sony, the official teaser is still very mysterious. The company only hinted that “when brilliance comes full circle, the next one is coming,” without laying out the spec sheet properly. But based on the timing and the leaks around it, this is almost certainly the launch window for the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, the brand’s next flagship phone.

For Malaysia and SEA, Xperia launches are always a bit niche, but still worth watching. Sony does not fight Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo or vivo on sheer volume here. Instead, Xperia phones usually appeal to a smaller crowd: mobile photographers, creators, headphone jack defenders, PlayStation/Sony ecosystem fans, and people who want a phone that feels closer to a camera tool than a TikTok machine.

The biggest expected change is the design. The Xperia 1 VIII is rumoured to move away from the older rear layout and adopt a new square camera island. Leaks also suggest the body will be just a little wider and thicker than the previous model. That may sound minor, but for Xperia users, handling matters a lot because Sony’s tall flagship phones have always had a very distinct feel compared to the usual Android slabs.

Camera-wise, the rumour mill points to a new telephoto sensor, possibly somewhere between 1/3.0-inch and 1/2.0-inch in size. The phone is also expected to carry a 16mm ultrawide and a 24mm main wide camera. If Sony gets the processing right, this could be a very interesting option for creators who shoot events, cosplay, concerts, car meets or gaming content around KL, Penang, JB and beyond.

There is also talk of a “2-day battery”, which would be a proper win if it holds up in real usage. SEA users are brutal on phones: hot weather, mobile data all day, Grab navigation, gaming, camera use, social posting, then more gaming. A flagship that can survive long days without power bank anxiety will always get attention here.

The other very Sony thing? Pricing. Early listings mentioned prices of €1,868.99 in Germany and £1,728 in the UK. Converted roughly, that sits in the painful territory of around RM9,400 to RM9,800 before any local pricing differences, taxes, bundles or official Malaysia availability. In other words, if this comes here, do not expect it to be cheap, bro. This is premium flagship money, even compared to the usual Ultra and Pro Max crowd.

Sony is also expected to use the event to reveal more than just the phone. GSMArena notes that the company is likely to announce the Sony A7R VI, a high-resolution full-frame flagship camera, plus a new 100-400mm f/4.5 GM lens. That makes the event feel more like a wider imaging showcase rather than a phone-only launch.

The big question for Malaysian buyers is simple: will the Xperia 1 VIII offer enough to justify its likely premium price? If Sony keeps creator-friendly features like advanced camera controls, strong audio, and possibly the 3.5mm jack hinted by certification leaks, it could still have a loyal audience. But in a market where gaming phones, foldables and camera flagships are all fighting hard, Sony needs more than nostalgia.

We will know more on May 13. If you are the type who still misses “proper” enthusiast phones, this one is worth keeping on your radar.
