PlayStation Plus Prices Are Going Up For New Subscribers In Select Regions

Sony is increasing PlayStation Plus prices for new subscribers in selected regions from 20 May, citing “ongoing market conditions” as the reason behind the move.

The good news, at least for existing members, is that the change will not hit most current subscribers immediately. Sony says current PlayStation Plus users will keep their existing pricing unless their subscription changes or expires. The exception is Turkey and India, where existing subscribers are also affected.

According to Sony’s announcement, new customer pricing will begin at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for a one-month subscription, and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for a three-month subscription.

Sony’s wording says prices “start at” those amounts, which strongly suggests this applies to the entry-level PlayStation Plus Essential tier. That is the basic plan most players use for online multiplayer access, monthly games, cloud saves, and store discounts. However, Sony has not clearly stated whether the more expensive Extra and Premium tiers are also getting adjusted in these selected regions.

For context, Eurogamer notes that PlayStation Plus Essential currently costs £6.99 per month in the UK, meaning the new monthly price would be a £1 increase. The three-month UK price currently sits at £19.99, so the new £21.99 price would be a £2 bump.

For Malaysian and SEA players, the key thing to watch is whether this eventually reaches our region. Sony’s announcement uses “select regions”, but does not list every affected market in the provided post. If Malaysia is not included right now, it still matters because subscription price hikes often roll out in waves. We have already seen gaming services, hardware, and digital storefront pricing become more sensitive to currency, tax, and regional market conditions.

PlayStation Plus is not exactly optional for many PS4 and PS5 owners. If you play games like EA Sports FC, Monster Hunter, Call of Duty, Helldivers, Tekken, or other online multiplayer titles, you usually need an active subscription. That makes even a small price increase annoying, especially for students and budget-conscious players who already have to juggle game prices, PS Store sales, and rising hardware costs.

The existing-subscriber rule is also important. If this pricing structure ever applies locally, letting your subscription lapse could mean losing your old rate. Same goes if you change your plan. So if you are already subscribed and happy with your tier, don’t simply cancel without checking the new price situation first.

The timing is interesting too. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium have been getting stronger catalogue drops, including big names like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Star Wars Outlaws in May’s line-up. That gives Sony more value to point at, but for players who only need Essential for online play, the monthly cost creeping upward still feels like paying more for access that used to be simpler.

For now, Malaysian players should treat this as a heads-up rather than panic news. No confirmed Malaysia-specific price change is mentioned in the source material. But if you are planning to subscribe soon, it is worth checking the local PS Store before 20 May and keeping an eye on whether Sony updates regional pricing pages.
