Valve-Backed AMD RADV Driver Is Being Ported From Linux to Windows

Windows gaming could be getting a very interesting open-source twist.

According to TechPowerUp, developers are working on bringing AMD’s RADV graphics driver — best known from the Linux world — over to Windows. The project is being handled by Collabora, with Valve sponsoring the first phase of development.

If you’re not deep into Linux gaming lore, here’s the quick version: RADV is an open-source AMD Vulkan driver built as part of the Mesa 3D graphics library. It is widely used on AMD-powered Linux systems and is designed for running Vulkan games and applications. In the Linux gaming scene, especially around Steam Deck-style software stacks, Mesa and RADV are a big deal because they give developers and the community much more visibility into how the graphics stack behaves.

The wild part? Windows has not had open-source GPU drivers from any major GPU vendor in this way. Graphics on Windows has traditionally meant closed drivers from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel. So the idea of RADV running on Windows is not just another driver update — it is a different approach to how PC graphics could be built, tested, and improved.

Collabora says it has already managed to run Counter-Strike 2 on the new Windows RADV driver. That does not mean everyone should expect a ready-to-install gaming driver tomorrow, bro. The work is still early, and TechPowerUp notes that there are still technical challenges to solve, including at least one blocker holding progress back.

Still, the fact that Counter-Strike 2 is already running is a meaningful proof point. CS2 is a real, modern competitive game, not some lightweight test demo. If a Vulkan-focused open-source driver can boot into a proper game on Windows, that gives the project a much more serious foundation.

Why this matters

The project is still in development, and the source material does not mention a public release date, supported hardware list, or availability for end users. For now, treat it as an early but exciting infrastructure move.
